TBC's History

TBC Rockford History

Temple Baptist Church was founded in 1880 in downtown Rockford. Services were originally spoken in Swedish. In the late fifties, Temple Baptist Church moved into a new building right in the heart of Rockford. Today, Temple Baptist is affectionately called “TBC” and, yes, some of our services are spoken in English! TBC has a service spoken in Burmese for our Myanmar friends living in Rockford.

Our heritage is built upon God’s Word and His faithfulness. Like many churches, Temple has gone through its ups and downs and we do not pretend to be perfect. We may have learned a few lessons the hard way. TBC is a multi-generational church that has learned through the years that the best way — is God’s way. In order to truly make a commitment to God’s leadership over the church, TBC is now referred to as “This Belongs to Christ.” As a congregation we strive to serve our Creator and do all things in His Name.  At the end of the day, God gets all the glory.

Walk through our doors and the first thing you will notice is a group of people waiting to welcome you into our family. We are real people with real problems living in a real but fallen world. But we have HOPE! We serve a Sovereign, Almighty, and Loving God. We know that all have fallen short of the glory of God (it’s true of Christians, too) and there is only one way to forgiveness and reconciliation with God — and that is through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

At TBC, we believe in God’s Word — all of it! We all need a Savior and only Jesus can be that Savior. Through Jesus, we are redeemed! The old person is gone and we are a new creation! Together, as a church family, we encourage one another and hold one another accountable. We love to be together! We know that church is more than just being entertained. Our pastor is available and accessible. Our children are as much a part of the church as the grown-ups are. Together we pray, learn from the Bible, we sing and celebrate, we cry and we try to reflect a Christ-like compassion, we give and we serve. And, we really love potlucks!
